Handbook versus patriotism

The hysteria of all those who have taken care of our country's fate has become a common facy in Romania's public life. So that no one wonders that, in the case of the troubled handbook supervised by historian Sorin Mitu, the tone of revolt tends to become a yell, the invective and grin have replaced the common sense. Historian Mitu was hacked by in Parliament, in newspapers, in TV shows, in vast exposure campaigns, as a public enemy of the lowest degree, as an absolute detractor of the Romanian nation, and with the half-learned air of debates, no serious historian didn't got out of torpor to come to the rescue of what Mitu did. Obviously, Marius Tuca's aggressive trickery, Tudor Popescu' patriotic frowning look, Sergiu Nicolaescu's exaggerated pathos, their robust nationalism are more seductive than Sorin Mitu's European-like handbook. Sorin Mitu is not an illustrious unknown character, as Valeriu Tabara claims. In the historian's world, he is known as the author of a fundamental book about the making of the national identity in Transylvania. Mitu is treating the national issue with modern tools; he sees in the national identity a cultural pattern, without immutable significance, undergoing changes from one period to another or according to events. To someone familiar with the nationalist dogmatism, phrases like "nations are invented", "national communities are imagined communities" probably sounds weird. Taking the risk to shock, Mitu transposed this new concept in teaching language in the handbook he supervised. Those who saw a manual of patriotism, an instrument of nationalist indoctrination in the history book, those who were used to find out how extraordinary are Romanians and what glorious things Romanian rulers did, unlike wicked facts Hungarian rulers did, had the unpleasant surprise to read a balanced handbook, pleading for reconciliation, paying more attention to modernism rather to the dark Middle Age, a book successfully getting out of the wooden language of old handbooks, without being finical or prolix. It is natural this book is appreciated by those having the nostalgia of the unique handbook, including a dogmatized, thick, mythical, laudatory history, a Bible in which the truth came out of an ideological transcendence, some kind of an exaggerated story, because "Hungarians do exactly the same" (as Marius Tuca suggested). If there weren't the nationalist fuss, much more attention would be probably paid to the initiative to reform the history book. For a change won't be easy. France failed, by early '80s, in the attempt to face national myths, the Heroes and Laws of the History. France gave up the nationalist and historic paradigm that established, as early as the 19th century, the approach manner for the history book. Initiators of the new trend in the French historiography (The School of Annale) ordered a secret study to catch the effects of the new methodology - reflected in history books too - on students. The conclusion of the survey was discouraging for those who ordered it. The students who learned about "long periods", "trans-national processes" didn't know about biographies, couldn't handle with the chronology and no longer stand out eras. Much more easier to learn about were glorious political events and extraordinary characters, especially when they were seasoned with the national detail. The conclusion was disarming for a while: a teaching tradition, rooted by a practice whose beginning can be taken for the emergence of the state-nation idea, cannot be easily dislocated from a cultural fashion. Nevertheless, French books have been gradually adjusted, and most significant is the fact that the 1789 revolution , which is related to France's national anniversary, was stripped of the mythical aura. Our old handbooks, with abundant reports, unreal air coming forth, had become the most loathed subject in school (and that is proved by special polls). If high-school graduates had had to take history books as a guide, history schools would have remained deserted. Old books didn't form patriots, but stressed students. The new handbook, with its fresh appearance, lively style, though clumsy sometimes, is refreshing. It is the first step to reforming the historic education. That thing must be said first about the handbook supervised by Sorin Mitu.
