 Iliescu imitates Constantinescu

The President of the Romanian Social Democracy Party (PDSR) Ion Iliescu tried yesterday to convince the hunger strikers in the Revolution Square to give up this form of protest. lliescu advised the December ’89 revolutionists to use other means of protest for the solution of their claims, which would not endanger their lives.
President Constantinescu had asked Sunday the strikers to do the same thing, assuring them that their protest will be solved. Yet, Dan Iosif, the leader of the striking revolutionists of the Revolution Square declared that he is determined to continue the hunger strike if the Executive does not withdraw from Parliament the bill of modifying Law 42/1990 and if the Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea does not apologise in public.
The National Union of the December Revolutionists (UNORD) sent yesterday a letter to the presidents of both Chambers of Parliament, demanding their support in solving the situation created after the Executive decided to modify Law 42/1990. The authors of the letter demand the replacement of senator Nicolae Dide from the function of president of the parliamentarian Commission for the application of Law 42, the consulting of all the revolutionist associations of the martyr-cities in any initiative of amending Law 42, as well as the Executive’s acknowledgement of the protocol signed on October 15, 1997 by its representatives and UNORD. The protocol stipulates the organization of a commission for the verification of the revolutionists’ files and to stop the debate on the bill of modifying Law 42.
About 150 UNORD revolutionists called last week on a hunger strike in many cities of the country, demanding the observation of this protocol.
