The Secretary of State Dan Dumitru Popescu, the president of the National Restructuring Agency has valued the underground Romanian economy at 30-40% of the total budgetary incomes. The secretary of state told Saturday the members of the Economic Commission of the North-Atlantic Assembly, who demanded data about the level of the parallel Romanian economy, that the exact dimension of the economic crime is difficult to state. Popescu added that the percentage which he proposed as a value of the underground economy is based on the difference between the budgetary incomes acquired by now (68% of the total estimated for this year) and the economic agents’ debts to the state budget.
The representatives of Russia and Canada requested a more exact definition of the papers belonging to the underground economy. Popescu mentioned in this respect the illicit and illegal papers regarding the bribe, the dodge and the products obtained without license.
The former head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), Virgil Magureanu mentioned last year the same percentage for the Romanian underground economy.
