The contract between the Swiss group Sulzer Hydro/ABB and RENEL (the Romanian Main Electricity Utility) for the modernization of the hydro-electric plant of Portile de Fier I will be signed within a few days, Christian Haegger, the president of the Sulzer Hydro Group, declared at the news conference on Tuesday.
The 2 million Swiss francs contract stipulates the modernization of the six hydro-generating sets of the plant within eight years. Sulzer ensures the financing of the activity, the payment being made according to an export contract of electricity to be supplied within the supplementary quantity of energy obtained after re-modernization. The re-modernization will result in the increase of each generating set’s power from 174 MW to 200 MW, as well as in the reduction of the costs for working and maintenance.
In 2000 the hydro-generating sets of Portile de Fier I will be 30 years old. At the end of 1995, the RENEL experts and Sulzer Hydro admitted that the system of Portile de Fier can function for two more years.
A dysfunction of a generator would mean losses of $ 2,000-3,000 a day, while the cost of a KW obtained from Portile de Fier is about 4 lei, the Sulzer representatives emphasised.
